Photos of Newsies performance on Sunday are below…

Kimberly Wilder, Coordinator of Riverhead Area School Info/RASi was so pleased to watch the wonderful performance of the play “Newsies” by Riverhead high school students this weekend.

Now, Riverhead RASi is thinking about how important it is to fund this and other great programs in Riverhead schools. Our focus this season is on preserving the Dual Language Program. Caring people inside the school district have tried to get this program off the ground over the years. This year, we had a new and innovative version of it with kindergartners at all four schools enrolled. Though, the district seems determined to diminish this program or, possibly, kill it “again.”

Please sign our petition to Save The Dual Language Program. Jack and the newsies would be proud for you to stand up for the children!

The show was wonderful. Stand out performances by lead actor, Ethan Caskie — who played clever and strong union organizer, Jack Kelly — AND by Cheyanne Metzger as strong woman, Medda Larkin. Wonderful, wonderful dancing and acrobatics! Great character acting!

Ironic moment the audience seemed to miss: There is a line in the beginning where a newsie wishes for great headlines so he can sell papers. “…We need an earthquake or a war…” I guess the war part is rather serious. Though, the earthquake made me almost laugh out loud. Yes, that just happened on Long Island (well, New Jersey).

Heartwarming moment: It was fun to see a show set in New York. I would actually call the play itself “Les MisĂ©rables light, as set in NYC”. It was so fun when the chorus and cast sang “King of New York”. I felt like it was the part of the wedding where we do a kick line! (Start spreading the news …. newsies …)

So happy that the community could come together for a performance like this one. Congrats to Ethan, Noah, Anthony C., Ben, and Rose and all for a job well done.
